Graduate Student Travel Fund

The Graduate Student Travel Fund (GSTF) supports travel associated with scholarly research and creative activities. It is funded by Associated Students and managed by the College of Graduate Studies.

Approximately $30,000 is available annually to support graduate student travel during three cycles: fall (September 1 - December 31), spring (January 1 - June 30), and summer (July 1 - August 31). The maximum award is $1,000 and must be used within each cycle's designated travel months.

Given that the College of Graduate Studies receives a set amount of funding from Associated Students for this award program, the competitive review process results in many qualified applicants not being selected for funding.

Applications for the spring cycle will open on January 19, 2024, and will close March 3, 2024 at 11:59 pm.

Spring 2024 Application Timeline/Requirements:
  • The GSTF is available to all degree-seeking SDSU graduate students with an accumulated grade point average of at least 3.0 that are registered in units at SDSU.
  • Applications for the GSTF must be received no later than March 3, 2024 at 11:59 pm.
  • Students awarded will be notified early April 2024 and the funds will be distributed on or after April 15, 2024.
  • Please note that if awarded, and your travel dates are outside of the cycle you applied and were awarded for, your award will be rescinded.
Criteria for Review:
The primary criteria used in evaluating applications for funding are as follows:
  • Relevance or merit of professional activity to support student’s research/scholarship in designated major field of study.
  • If attending a conference, the student must be invited to give an oral or poster presentation. In the case of performance or visual arts the student must be invited to present. Simply attending a conference will not be awarded. You do not need the acceptance of your invitation to present at the time of application as long as you have submitted to present.
  • Appropriateness of scope and budget.
  • Contribution to completion of a thesis or dissertation.
  • Prior awards received from GSTF.
  • Please note this is not for group travel as the awards are limited.
Restrictions:

GSTF funding may not be used for SDSU coursework, coursework at other institutions, or training conferences.

Important Reminders:
  • It is the student's responsibility to ensure that all travel paperwork is on file in their home department and if traveling internationally, they have completed the process through the Global Education Office
  • The project abstract should be non-technical and should be understandable to an educated reader, who is not an expert in your field.
  • Upon completion of the activity supported by the GSTF, the student should submit a summary of accomplishments. If appropriate, photos taken during the activity with a description of how the activity contributed to the advancement of the research or scholarship in the student’s field of study may be profiled on the Graduate Studies webpage.
  • The Center for Student Rights and Responsibilities and the student’s home college will be consulted to ensure that potential awardees are in compliance with the Student Code of Conduct and/or their program’s Graduate Professional Standards.
    • Award nominees: A potential awardee is subject to being deemed ineligible for an award if (a) it is determined by CSRR that the student is in violation of the Student Code of Conduct and/or (b) if the program notifies the College of Graduate Studies that the student has violated their program’s Graduate Professional Standards.
    • Current awardees: A current student awardee is subject to having their fellowship or scholarship rescinded if (a) it is determined by CSRR that the student is in violation of the Student Code of Conduct and/or (b) if the program notifies the College of Graduate Studies that the student has violated their program’s Graduate Professional Standards
